Liverpool’s 2025/26 campaign quickly turned into one of the most disappointing seasons the club has experienced in recent years.
After winning the Premier League title during his debut campaign, Arne Slot failed to build on that momentum during his second season at Anfield.
Liverpool eventually finished fifth in the table with only 60 points. The Reds struggled badly with consistency throughout the campaign.
They suffered a disastrous mid-season collapse after losing nine out of 12 matches. Now, several factors contributed to the decline.
Liverpool found it difficult to adjust following the departures of key figures like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luis Díaz.
Meanwhile, the tragic passing of Diogo Jota in July 2025 cast a heavy shadow over the entire season and deeply affected the squad emotionally.
Although Liverpool still managed to reach the Champions League quarter-finals, performances in domestic competitions remained underwhelming.
Supporters also became increasingly frustrated with Slot’s tactical approach. His football was regularly criticised as too passive and predictable.
Also, tensions inside the dressing room reportedly increased during the second half of the season.
There were also reports of disagreements involving Mohamed Salah as pressure around the Dutch manager continued growing.
Eventually, Liverpool’s hierarchy decided to act. The club officially sacked Slot on May 30 before quickly appointing Andoni Iraola as his replacement.
However, despite his difficult exit from Anfield, Slot may not remain out of work for long.
According to TEAMtalk, Fulham are now considering Arne Slot as one of the candidates to replace Marco Silva this summer.
Silva will leave the club and to become Benfica’s new head coach. As a result, Fulham have already started assessing several possible replacements ahead of next season.
Former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, ex-Tottenham boss Thomas Frank, and Slot are all under serious consideration.
Now, it remains to be seen whether Arne Slot will receive an immediate opportunity to rebuild his reputation in the Premier League following his difficult spell at Liverpool.
