Barcelona are quietly moving into position to host one of the biggest nights in world football.
According to ESPN, the club and city authorities are already working behind the scenes to push Spotify Camp Nou as the venue for the 2030 FIFA World Cup final.
During the Mundo Deportivo Grand Gala, Barcelona mayor Jaume Collboni confirmed that the city has officially set its sights on staging the tournament’s showpiece match.
Barcelona have already submitted their candidacy to both the Royal Spanish Football Federation and FIFA. Camp Nou is the proposed venue.
Explaining the motivation behind the bid, Collboni pointed to Barcelona’s long history of hosting global sporting events and the city’s confidence in doing so again. He said:
“Barcelona has always had a great ambition to host major sporting events.
“A few days ago, I told Rafael Louzan, president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, that the city would be very excited and ready to host the 2030 World Cup final.”
The mayor also made it clear that the final decision will rest entirely with FIFA.
“As FIFA has said, it is a competitive venue. This will be decided by FIFA, but I have already conveyed our enthusiasm for hosting the event.”
With that confirmation, Spotify Camp Nou has officially entered the race. The stadium is already being lined up to host the 2029 Champions League final.
However, Barcelona will face serious competition. The Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid remains a strong candidate, while Morocco’s Hassan II Stadium is also in contention.
By comparison, the Bernabéu’s capacity of around 84,000 puts it behind both rivals. The 2030 World Cup will be jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
