The BBC have confirmed a major shake-up to their football coverage, bringing an end to one of their most recognisable programmes after more than five decades.
Football Focus will be cancelled at the end of the current season. The show first aired in 1974 and has been a key part of the broadcaster’s football output, especially during the traditional Saturday schedule around the 3pm blackout.
However, the decision reflects a wider shift in how audiences now consume football content. In a statement, the BBC explained the reasoning behind the move. They said:
“Following extensive consideration, BBC Sport has decided to say goodbye to Football Focus at the end of this season.
“First broadcast in 1974, Football Focus is a testament to the brilliant team who have worked on it over the years and, of course, the audience.
“The programme has been a staple of the BBC’s football coverage for decades, providing fans with interviews, analysis and stories from across the game ahead of the weekend’s fixtures.
“But changing audience behaviours mean fans are now increasingly consuming football content in different ways and we need to respond appropriately as we face difficult decisions around how the licence fee is spent.”
“Fans are accessing discussion, highlights, analysis and news through digital platforms and on-demand viewing and as viewing habits continue to evolve, it is right that BBC Sport adapts how it brings football coverage to the widest audiences.”
As part of those changes, BBC Sport will expand its digital content and introduce new formats across platforms, including YouTube.
Meanwhile, presenter Alex Scott will remain a central figure in their football coverage.
She will play a key role in upcoming major tournaments and continue her involvement in other flagship programmes. BBC Sport director Alex Kay-Jelski also addressed the decision. He said:
“Football Focus has been a hugely important programme in the history of BBC Sport and has played a key role in telling the stories of the game for generations of viewers.”
The change marks the end of an era as the BBC reshapes its football coverage for a new generation.
