Brighton officially fire former Arsenal man after just 9 months

Brighton still showed faith in Hurzeler despite a difficult season.

Brighton & Hove Albion endured another rollercoaster Premier League season under Fabian Hurzeler.

The Seagulls started the campaign brightly and quickly emerged as outside contenders for the European places after impressive wins early in the season.

However, things soon started falling apart during the winter period.

Brighton managed just one win in 13 matches and dropped dangerously close to the bottom half of the table as pressure started building around the club.

Hurzeler eventually steadied the situation after adjusting his tactics and relying more on experienced players like James Milner.

That recovery helped Brighton finish eighth in the Premier League for a second consecutive season and secure qualification for the UEFA Conference League.

Despite the late improvement, major changes have continued behind the scenes at the Amex Stadium.

Brighton have now officially confirmed the departure of sporting director Jason Ayto after only nine months at the club.

Ayto arrived on the South Coast in September 2025 after previously building a strong reputation during his time at Arsenal’s academy and recruitment department.

Brighton viewed him as an important appointment following David Weir’s exit and hoped he could continue the club’s successful recruitment structure.

During his short spell at the club, Ayto played a role in securing the futures of several young players. That included a former Arsenal youngster, Amario Cozier-Duberry.

However, Brighton’s inconsistent season reportedly triggered a wider internal review led by owner Tony Bloom.

Reports claim the club decided a “fresh perspective” was needed ahead of the summer transfer window. Brighton thanked Ayto in a brief statement before confirming his departure.

The club have already started searching for a replacement. They will continue relying heavily on their data-driven recruitment model.

Meanwhile, Brighton showed faith in Hurzeler despite a difficult season. They handed the manager a new contract running until 2029.
