Todd Boehly was a part of the BlueCo with Clearlake Capital that purchased Chelsea in 2022 from the Russian businessman Roman Abramovich.
Under the regime of Abramovich, Chelsea became one of the most successful clubs in Europe. He was the owner of the Blues from 2003 to 2022. During this time, they won 21 trophies.
The Russian businessman won everything with Chelsea. The Blues won five Premier League titles and two Champions League titles during his reign.
But since he sold the club to BlueCo, the club has failed to replicate that success. Only last year did they win the Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup.
And one of the major issues Todd Boehly faced during his early years at the club was the lack of knowledge of football.
The 52-year-old has now openly spoken about how clueless he was during his initial days as the interim sporting director of the club, where he had to sign new players.
He has accepted that some of his moves were amateurish, and he signed most of his initial players because Chelsea’s rivals wanted to sign those players.
While speaking at the iConnections conference, Todd Boehly candidly spoke about the mistakes he made initially and the things he learned. The American businessman said (quotes via The Sun):
“Finding those right elements, the first time at anything is tricky.
“So you’re going to make mistakes, and obviously, having taken over in the circumstances that we did, basically the whole management team left.
“I was stuck being interim sporting director for the summer, having no idea what made a good football player.
“But I knew that with Marc Cucurella, if Man City wants him, I want him. It was pretty simple that way.”
After hearing this, Chelsea fans were furious online. One fan immediately wrote on social media:
“Boehly admitting amateur hour in charge. Explains everything.”
Todd Boehly also owns the MLB giants, the LA Dodgers. Apart from that, he also has a stake in the LA Lakers.
