Chelsea breaking news

Some moments in football stop everything.

The ball doesn’t matter; the result doesn’t matter.

Which’s exactly what happened at Stamford Bridge today.

Chelsea provide update on Jesse Derry after teenager hospitalised

According to Chelsea’s official account, the club have confirmed that Jesse Derry has been taken to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for precautionary tests following a sickening clash of heads with Nottingham Forest’s Zach Abbott in the first half of today’s Premier League fixture at Stamford Bridge.

Early signs are reported to be positive.

But the incident itself was deeply alarming.

Forty-four minutes into his full Premier League debut, Derry leapt for a ball in the Nottingham Forest box and collided with Abbott as both players went up for the same header.

Derry came off considerably worse.

He was left motionless on the turf, surrounded immediately by medical staff from both clubs.

A hush fell over Stamford Bridge.

Eventually, Derry was stretchered from the field of play.

He was replaced by Liam Delap, while Chelsea were awarded a penalty for the incident.

Only for Cole Palmer to see his penalty saved by Matz Sels, leaving the hosts still 2-0 down heading into half-time.

The result, at that point, felt entirely secondary.

One of Chelsea’s brightest attacking threats in the opening exchanges, he carried himself with a confidence that suggested this wouldn’t be his only Premier League appearance.

For now, the football is irrelevant.

What matters is that Jesse Derry is receiving the care he needs.
