Liverpool endured a disappointing 2025/26 campaign that ended with a fifth-place finish in the Premier League and the departure of Arne Slot.
Despite the struggles around him, Dominik Szoboszlai emerged as one of the few bright spots during a difficult season at Anfield.
The Hungary captain featured in 36 Premier League matches, scoring six goals and providing seven assists.
He also impressed in Europe, contributing five goals and four assists in 12 Champions League appearances.
Across all competitions, Szoboszlai finished the campaign with 13 goals and 12 assists from 53 matches. His importance extended beyond numbers alone.
The 25-year-old regularly adapted his role for the team and even filled in at right-back when Liverpool’s squad was stretched.
Those performances attracted interest from several major European clubs as he entered the final two years of his contract.
Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain were all linked with a move for the midfielder during recent months.
Liverpool, however, remained determined to protect one of the foundations of their next project.
The club are particularly eager to avoid another difficult contract situation following the departures of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate on free transfers.
According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool are now closing in on agreeing a bumper new long-term contract with Dominik Szoboszlai.
Discussions have been ongoing for some time and are now believed to be approaching their conclusion.
The report states that Szoboszlai has always wanted to commit his future to Liverpool and was eager to remain at Anfield.
Now, they have not signed the agreement yet, but a formal conclusion is nearing for both parties.
The midfielder could also travel to the United States with the rest of Liverpool’s squad on Monday.
The new contract could keep Szoboszlai at Liverpool until 2030 or 2031 and would include a significant salary increase.
