He once lifted the Premier League trophy with Chelsea and shared a dressing room with some of the biggest names in the game.
His career spanned clubs like Real Madrid, Newcastle United, and Middlesbrough. For years, he was celebrated as one of Africa’s finest exports to European football.
But now, his name is back in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. And not because of anything he did on the pitch.
The trouble started during a tense moment at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. A clash erupted during Cameroon’s group stage match against Gambia.
Emotions were high. Words were exchanged. Things escalated. And soon, it was no longer about football but about control, authority, and pride.
What followed was dramatic. Security had to step in. One of the individuals involved was allegedly removed by force on instructions from top officials.
The incident was buried for a while, but the fallout has now arrived, loud and clear. Cameroon’s football federation, Fecafoot, has made a major call.
The decision has rocked the local football scene and sparked major debate. A once-revered figure in Cameroonian football has been banned for five years from all football-related activities.
According to Express, the ban was handed to none other than Geremi Njitap, a former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder.
Fecafoot also issued a fine of £13,000. His assistant did not escape punishment either, receiving a two-year suspension.
Geremi is expected to challenge the ruling. He may even take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Meanwhile, Samuel Eto’o, head of Fecafoot and the other figure involved in the row is facing fresh scrutiny over his leadership.
For a man who once dominated Europe’s biggest stages, this might be the toughest battle yet.
