Match-fixing has repeatedly damaged football’s integrity, with major scandals stretching back more than a century.
England faced an early controversy in 1915 involving Liverpool and Manchester United players.
Italy later experienced the Totonero scandal and Calciopoli crisis, which produced significant sporting punishments.
French football was also rocked by Marseille’s 1993 bribery scandal. The club subsequently lost its domestic title and suffered relegation.
Another alleged case has now emerged from international football in south-east Asia.
According to The Guardian, Laos international Soukphachan Lueanthala has been arrested in connection with alleged match-fixing during the 2026 Asean Championship.
The winger represented Laos during the tournament and plays domestically for Salavan United.
Lueanthala is accused of helping organise an alleged operation for a betting syndicate believed to be from Vietnam.
Sources close to the Laos team said several players were questioned after returning from their final tournament match.
That game ended with Laos suffering a 7-2 defeat away against Myanmar in early August.
Their other group matches produced heavy defeats against Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines.
The Laos Football Federation confirmed on August 7 that it had launched an investigation. Suspected bribery, illegal gambling and match manipulation were subsequently referred to police.
As per reports, Lueanthala gave instructions to other players. He is also suspected of acting as a link between those involved.
Neither the federation nor Lao police has publicly confirmed his arrest. However, The Guardian established that Lueanthala is in custody.
The allegations follow previous match-fixing problems involving football in Laos.
The Asian Football Confederation imposed a lifetime ban on Thipphonexay Inthavongsa in 2020. He was found guilty of conspiring to manipulate a 2017 international against Hong Kong.
The latest allegations now place Laos football under further scrutiny while authorities investigate the suspected operation.
