A former Chelsea captain has officially announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of the season.
The veteran defender enjoyed one of the most successful careers of the modern era and represented several major clubs across Europe.
After leaving Chelsea, the Spanish defender continued playing in La Liga before spending this season back in Spain.
Now, after two decades in professional football, Cesar Azpilicueta has officially confirmed the time has come to step away from the game.
The 36-year-old shared an emotional farewell letter on social media confirming this season will be his last as a professional footballer. Azpilicueta wrote:
“Dear football, today, I want to share with you that this season will be my last as a professional footballer. After so many years living my dream, I feel it’s time to start a new chapter in my life.”
Azpilicueta spent two years at Atletico Madrid after leaving Chelsea before later joining Sevilla for the current campaign.
The defender also represented Marseille and Osasuna earlier in his career while earning 44 international caps for Spain. However, his most memorable years came at Chelsea.
Azpilicueta became one of the club’s most respected leaders during an 11-year spell at Stamford Bridge.
The Spaniard won every major trophy possible with Chelsea, including the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup and Club World Cup.
He also captained the side during one of the most successful periods in the club’s recent history.
Reflecting on his journey, Azpilicueta thanked teammates, coaches, supporters and family members who supported him throughout his career. He wrote:
“To the fans: your passion and support inspired me to give my best every day. I hope you saw a player who always gave everything for your colours, with pride and heart.”
Now, after more than 20 seasons at the highest level, Cesar Azpilicueta prepares to close the curtain on an incredible football career.
