Breaking News - Liverpool

Some careers are defined by talent; some by controversy.

And some, long after the playing days are over, continue to generate headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Ex-Liverpool star handed prison sentence after failing to pay nearly £14,000 in child support

According to The Sun, former Liverpool striker El Hadji Diouf, has been handed a one-year suspended prison sentence by the Dakar District Court in Senegal, after being found guilty of failing to meet his child support obligations.

He was also ordered to pay 10 million West African francs, approximately £13,220, in damages.

He reportedly stopped making his payments in March 2024, following his split from his wife.

Diouf was absent from several hearings throughout the proceedings, and was ultimately sentenced in absentia.

His ex-wife’s legal team argued that Diouf had the financial means to pay.

She pointed to advertising partnerships, real estate investments and income from his work with the Senegalese Football Federation.

Yet, under Senegalese law, refusing to pay court-ordered child support is treated as a criminal offence.

The sentence is suspended, meaning Diouf won’t serve time behind bars, for now.

However, the conviction itself is significant, and the reputational damage it carries is real.

His career at Liverpool between 2002 and 2004 was always more notable for controversy than it was for goals.

He was fined by Glasgow Sheriff Court for spitting at a Celtic fan.

Banned for three matches for spitting at Portsmouth defender Arjan de Zeeuw.

Off the pitch, he was named in Pele’s FIFA 100 list of the greatest living players in 2004.

A recognition of the ability that was always visible when the controversy wasn’t obscuring it.

On the international stage with Senegal, he was genuinely extraordinary.

One of the standout players of the 2002 World Cup, where he helped the African nation beat defending champions France.

That legacy remains intact.

But the story being told in Dakar this week is a very different one.
