Manchester City won their first-ever Premier League title in 2012 in perhaps the most dramatic fashion ever. The last-minute goal from Sergio Aguero sealed the deal for the Citizens.
Also, it broke the hearts of many Manchester United fans. City were losing that game against QPR and they needed two stoppage time goals from Edin Dzeko and Aguero to win the league.
After the game, many United fans screamed that QPR let City win the league. This comes from the fact that QPR was in a relegation battle coming to the final matchday.
They needed to win. But if Bolton Wanderers fail to win against Stoke City, they would be safe and stay in the top-flight for another season.
During the match, news filtered through to the players and fans that Bolton had failed to win their match against Stoke City.
This meant QPR’s place in the Premier League was secure regardless of their result against Manchester City.
Mike Dean was the referee in that game. And he also noticed something strange happened after QPR players knew they were safe in the Premier League.
Recently, the former referee appeared on The Overlap, where he explained everything:
“They [City] make it 2-2, and they [QPR] just kick it back and give it to them.
“And we were like, ‘What’s going on, why are they giving the ball back straightaway?’ I said in the earpiece. To kick off and give the ball straight back to them.”
However, Mike Dean was not the only man who felt something strange happening on the pitch. He further added:
“Neil Swarbrick, the fourth official, said, ‘Keep switched on, something is going to happen.’ You just knew something was going to happen.
“You could just tell. What was strange about it, once QPR found out they were safe, Jamie Mackie was on the pitch celebrating while the game was still going on.”
Without any doubt, that last-minute Aguero goal was one of the most dramatic moments in Premier League history.
