Jamie Carragher became the subject of bankruptcy proceedings following a dispute with HM Revenue and Customs.
HMRC filed a petition against the former Liverpool defender in August 2026 over an unpaid tax bill. The case subsequently progressed to the Insolvency and Companies Court in London.
The proceedings placed Carragher’s financial dispute under scrutiny months after HMRC initiated its legal action.
A bankruptcy petition allows a creditor to ask a court to recover outstanding funds. HMRC considers the process a last resort when attempting to collect unpaid taxes.
Carragher had been expected to resolve the issue quickly after the petition emerged. The case has now reached an important conclusion following a court hearing.
According to The Athletic, Judge Nicholas Briggs dismissed the bankruptcy petition against Carragher on Tuesday after a payment was made.
The decision means the 48-year-old former Liverpool defender will not face bankruptcy through the petition. The final court hearing did not disclose the amount involved.
Carragher has built a prominent broadcasting career since retiring from professional football in 2013.
The former defender spent 17 years in Liverpool’s first team and made 737 appearances. He also helped the club win the Champions League in 2005 and UEFA Cup in 2001.
Carragher moved into football broadcasting following his retirement and became a regular Premier League pundit.
He remains a long-standing figure on Sky Sports’ football coverage. Carragher also regularly features on Stick to Football, which belongs to Gary Neville’s The Overlap production company.
The dismissal brings the bankruptcy proceedings stemming from the tax dispute to an end.
Expectations that Carragher would resolve the matter quickly have therefore proved correct following the payment and subsequent court decision.
