Barcelona are at the top of the La Liga table. And, they are well on their way towards defending their title. Also, with the summer transfer window closing, they are preparing for the summer.
However, something major is about to happen in the boardroom of the Catalan giants. And before that, their president, Joan Laport, has just dropped a bombshell.
Barcelona are heading toward a major institutional change. The club is now preparing to officially call presidential elections at the start of next week.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the announcement will be made on Monday. At the same time, the current president, Joan Laporta, will formally resign from his position.
This move will immediately activate Barcelona’s electoral process. And the club’s statutes will govern the entire process. However, they need to follow some key rules.
Any current board member who wishes to appear on Laporta’s electoral list must first step down from their role. This requirement is designed to ensure transparency during the campaign period.
Meanwhile, Barcelona must avoid being placed under a temporary management committee.
To prevent that scenario, at least one third of the current board must remain in office. That means a minimum of six directors will continue managing the club’s day-to-day affairs.
As a result, leadership will temporarily pass to Rafa Yuste. He will take over as acting president and remain in charge until June 30.
This will ensure continuity while the electoral process unfolds. Importantly, Laporta’s future plans will not exclude those board members.
If Laporta wins the elections, those directors will be able to rejoin his governing team from July 1, once the new mandate officially begins. Barcelona are now entering a critical political period.
