Jurgen Klopp has been outspoken since leaving the role of Liverpool manager. The German boss has been a bit critical about the former Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson.
It is not like Klopp does not respect the British manager. The truth is quite the opposite. After winning the Premier League with Liverpool, Klopp received congratulatory calls from Sir Alex.
The respect between the two has been mutual. However, there are times when Klopp also criticised Sir Alex, and the ex-Red Devils boss did the same.
Recently, when Klopp appeared on The Diary Of A CEO podcast by Steven Bartlett, the former Liverpool boss opened up about the last Ferguson team that won the Premier League in 2023.
That team had some Manchester United legends such as Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand, and Nemanja Vidic.
Also, Robin van Persie played a huge role in helping United clinch their 20th league title. After joining the Red Devils from Arsenal, Van Persie went on to win the Golden Boot that season.
However, Klopp believes that the 2013 title-winning Manchester United team was not a team that can sustain success for a long time after Sir Alex Ferguson. The German manager said:
“The last team that Sir Alex Ferguson won the Premier League with in 2013 was build to fail. It was not a team you build the future on.”
It is hard to argue about what Klopp said. In fact, he is spot on as United didn’t build for their future at the time.
They were depending on players like Scholes, Giggs, and Ferdinand, who were at the end of their careers.
Since Ferguson left the club, Manchester United have become a shadow of their old self. Forget about winning the league; last season, even surviving in the top division became a challenge.
The win against Liverpool will give confidence to Ruben Amorim and Manchester United as they will now look to build on that result on Sunday.
