Lewi Richards officially signs for Chelsea

Italian manager knows that he needs squad depth.

Enzo Maresca

Chelsea are quite inconsistent this season. After winning the Club World Cup, it seemed Enzo Marsca’s team was ready for a title challenge.

However, they had a draw in their opening Premier League game against Crystal Palace, a team that has become a thorn in Liverpool’s side.

Enzo Maresca’s team came back strongly against West Ham United and Fulham, as they won both those games.

Next, they drew against Brentford and lost to Manchester United. Both these were away fixtures. In their next home game, the Blues once again lost but this time to Brighton.

They did get a dramatic win in their next home game against Liverpool. The Blues backed it up with another Premier League victory against Nottingham Forest.

This game became the last game for Ange Postecoglou as the Forest manager. But last week’s loss to Sunderland has raised questions over Maresca’s future.

There are also reports that Chelsea have already picked Maresca’s successor. However, Enzo Maresca is unlikely to get the sack as he has produced some good results.

However, Chelsea are 9th in the Premier League table. The Blues have a higher ambition than just finishing in the top half of the table.

Enzo Maresca knows this. The London club wants to be in the Champions League and compete for the Premier League title.

For that, the Italian manager knows that he needs squad depth. And, the board is listening to Enzo Maresca with their latest signing.

Chelsea officially announced the signing of Lewi Richardson, an academy prospect who has signed his first professional contract with the Blues.

Richardson, 17, plays for the Chelsea under-18 side. The centre-back may not get into the first team as of now, but he is surely one for the future.

The Blues will hope for more such players to come out of their academy. It is a good sign for the club’s future.
