Some managerial situations reach a point where the writing on the wall becomes impossible to ignore.
At Liverpool, that moment appears to have arrived.
Because although Liverpool have decided to stick with Arne Slot, things aren’t always straightforward.
And now, a phone call that tells you everything about where the club’s thinking is heading.
Liverpool contact Real Madrid to gather information on Xabi Alonso
According to Diario AS, Liverpool have directly contacted Real Madrid to inquire about Xabi Alonso, seeking what the report describes as “letters of recommendation” before deciding whether to entrust their former midfield maestro with the long-term future of the club.
The call went to Valdebebas.
Liverpool wanted to understand exactly what happened during Alonso’s brief, turbulent reign as Real Madrid manager.
Alonso was appointed at the Bernabeu in June 2025 to succeed Carlo Ancelotti.
He lasted seven months.
Despite winning his first El Clasico 2-1, his tenure ended by mutual consent in January 2026, shortly after a Spanish Super Cup final defeat to Barcelona.
Since then, he’s been one of the most coveted free agents in world football.
But Liverpool have always felt like the destination that made the most emotional and footballing sense.
Now, with Arne Slot’s position under genuine scrutiny, the moment has potentially arrived.
Slot guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in his debut season.
But this campaign has been a disaster by any reasonable measure.
The crowd at Anfield have booed.
Slot himself acknowledged their frustration publicly, saying he would “love to show them something else.”
Liverpool’s ownership are still behind him.
But the fact that the club are conducting due diligence on a potential replacement suggests they’re preparing for every outcome.
The relationship between Liverpool and Real Madrid remains open, despite tensions over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure.
And that openness allowed for a direct conversation that, under normal circumstances, would never become public.
Xabi Alonso back at Anfield.
The appointment Liverpool supporters have been waiting for since the day Klopp said goodbye.
