Luka Modric to return to Real Madrid

Modric is currently contracted to AC Milan and his contract will expire on June 30.

Luka Modric brought an extraordinary chapter at Real Madrid to an end after the 2024-25 season. The Croatian midfielder left the club as one of the most decorated players in club’s history and closed a remarkable 13-season in the Spanish capital.

Modric arrived from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012 and developed into one of the most influential players of his generation. Alongside Toni Kroos and Casemiro, he helped Real Madrid dominate European football for more than a decade.

The midfielder won six Champions League titles and four La Liga crowns during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu.

He also achieved individual recognition in 2018 when he won the Ballon d’Or and ended the long-standing dominance of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

As a result, many supporters have wondered whether Modric’s association with Real Madrid is truly over. Questions about his long-term future have continued to surface since his departure from the club.

Now, fresh comments from one of Croatian football’s biggest names have added further intrigue to the situation.

Speaking to Radio MARCA‘s La Tribu programme, Davor Suker suggested that Luka Modric could return to Real Madrid in the future. Suker said:

“Now they asked me where he’s going to stay, either in Milan or in Madrid… I think something is going to happen with Real Madrid.”

The comments immediately sparked speculation about what role Modric could play at the club. However, Suker did not stop there.

When asked directly whether he believed Modric would return to Real Madrid, the former striker delivered an even stronger response. He said:

“He’ll definitely come back, but I don’t know how… We’ll wait until after the World Cup and see what happens.”

Those remarks have naturally fuelled further discussion around Modric’s future. However, Suker remained unwilling to reveal any additional details. Suker added:

“I can’t say any more, I can’t say any more, mate. Leave it open a little, you can’t say everything,” he replied with a laugh.

“He’s definitely going to do something with Real Madrid, I can assure you of that.”

Jose Mourinho returned to Real Madrid as the new manager, and he was the one who signed Modric from Tottenham. Also, Mourinho is bringing Sami Khedira back as part of his backroom staff.

Modric is currently contracted to AC Milan, and his contract will expire on June 30.  For now, Modric’s next step remains unclear.

However, Suker’s confident remarks suggest that another connection between the Croatian legend and Real Madrid could emerge after the World Cup.
