Manchester City are preparing for life after Pep Guardiola. The Spaniard ended his remarkable ten-year spell at the Etihad Stadium after guiding the club to another successful campaign.
City finished second in the Premier League and won both the FA Cup and EFL Cup before Guardiola announced his departure. As a result, club officials quickly began the search for his successor.
Several names emerged during the process, but Enzo Maresca consistently remained at the top of the shortlist.
However, negotiations proved complicated because the manager remained tied to Chelsea. Compensation became the biggest obstacle.
Talks continued behind the scenes as both clubs attempted to reach an agreement. Now a breakthrough has finally arrived.
According to Italian transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, Manchester City have agreed a compensation package worth £17 million with Chelsea to appoint Enzo Maresca as Guardiola’s successor.
The agreement clears the path for Maresca to take charge at the Etihad Stadium. The Italian left Chelsea on New Year’s Day after a dispute with the club’s hierarchy.
Despite his departure, Chelsea still held contractual rights because Maresca walked away from his deal rather than being dismissed.
The report states that a verbal agreement has now been reached and Maresca will travel to Manchester before signing a three-year contract.
Maresca enjoyed success during his time at Stamford Bridge. He guided Chelsea to UEFA Conference League and Club World Cup success.
