Manchester City lodge appeal against independent commission’s verdict

The club will limit further public comments while the process continues.

The long-running financial case of Manchester City has entered the appeal stage following the independent commission’s verdict.

The Premier League initially charged City in February 2023 after conducting a multi-year investigation into the club’s finances.

The allegations cover the period between 2009 and 2018. They include claims involving sponsorship revenue and financial reporting.

An independent commission subsequently found Manchester City guilty of 114 of the 115 charges brought against them.

However, the commission has not yet determined the sanctions. That process remains separate from its findings on the alleged breaches.

City have consistently maintained their innocence throughout the case. They previously confirmed their intention to challenge the commission’s decision.

The Premier League champions have now formally taken that step before the deadline. Manchester City confirmed that they lodged a comprehensive appeal at 7pm on Thursday, October 1.

The club believes the commission’s opinion contains material errors involving law, principle and fact. City also consider the verdict unsafe and maintain that they possess evidence supporting their position.

The appeal will now continue through the Premier League’s disciplinary process.

The new Premier League rules require an appeal hearing within 12 weeks. Also, a decision must arrive within 30 days after the hearing concludes. The hearing itself can last no longer than five days.

Meanwhile, the Football Association is monitoring the ongoing proceedings.

The FA said the commission’s decision carries significant implications for the integrity of the game. It will consider action where appropriate. Manchester City’s appeal means the case remains unresolved.

The club will limit further public comments while the process continues. Attention will now shift towards the appeal proceedings and the separate decision over potential sanctions.
