Manchester City’s preparations for a gruelling December have taken a hit after Pep Guardiola confirmed that John Stones has suffered a fresh injury setback.
The defender was absent from the squad during City’s 3-0 win over Sunderland, and his omission quickly raised concerns given his importance and hybrid role in the side.
Guardiola addressed the situation after the match, explaining the reason behind Stones’ absence. He told reporters, before admitting uncertainty over a potential return date:
“He was injured, yes. To be honest, I don’t know.”
The lack of clarity arrives at a difficult moment, with City facing Real Madrid in midweek and a congested run of Christmas fixtures.
City’s victory over Sunderland, secured through goals from Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol and Phil Foden. This win offered some reassurance as they closed the gap on Arsenal.
Yet Stones’ renewed injury problems cast a shadow over an otherwise commanding performance.
His repeated absences over the last 18 months have interrupted momentum both for him and the squad.
There was also a revealing admission from Phil Foden, who despite starring once again, informed Guardiola after the match that he was not fully fit. Guardiola said.
“Phil is incredible. He’s scoring a lot of goals… He told to me after, ‘I didn’t feel well today.’ And look what happened; how he runs in-behind and regaining the ball.
“Phil, when he’s in these momentums, in this mood, he’s a gift. He’s a diamond. He’s top. Top.”
With Real Madrid next and domestic fixtures piling up, Manchester City now face a critical period with uncertainty surrounding one of their most influential players.
Pep Guardiola will be hoping medical updates bring better news in the coming days.
