Portugal will now hope Martinez’s decisions pay off.

Portugal squad

Portugal have officially confirmed their squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Roberto Martinez prepares for another major international tournament.

The World Cup will begin on June 11 in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Portugal will arrive with high expectations once again after building one of the strongest squads in international football.

As expected, Cristiano Ronaldo will captain the side despite turning 41 earlier this year.

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes also keeps his place after another strong campaign, while Manchester City trio Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva and Matheus Nunes all made the final squad.

However, Martinez also made several brutal decisions before naming his 26-man group.

Portugal have surprisingly left West Ham United midfielder Matheus Fernandes out of their World Cup squad.

The 21-year-old recently earned his first senior Portugal call-up in March after impressing consistently for West Ham during a difficult campaign.

His performances also attracted interest from several major clubs across Europe.

Reports recently linked Manchester United with Fernandes after Bruno Fernandes reportedly recommended the midfielder to Old Trafford chiefs.

Despite that momentum, Martinez still excluded the young midfielder from the final squad.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Joao Palhinha also failed to make the group despite already making 37 appearances for Portugal at senior level.

Meanwhile, Martinez kept faith with several experienced names ahead of the tournament.

Portugal’s attacking options include Rafael Leao, Pedro Neto, Joao Felix, Francisco Conceicao and Goncalo Ramos alongside Ronaldo.

Vitinha, Joao Neves, Ruben Neves and Bernardo Silva will lead the midfield unit during the competition.
