Premier League broadcasting nears major change

This could change the way fans see the Premier League.

Premier League broadcasting

Over the years, the Premier League broadcasting style has changed a lot. However, many new platforms have broadcast the English top-flight domestic club competition in their own style.

But within the next 12 months, a massive change can happen in the Premier League broadcasting. And this could change the way fans see the Premier League.

Netflix is now considering a move for Premier League broadcast rights after narrowly missing out on major UEFA packages.

The Times reports that the streaming giant submitted bids for the UEFA Super Cup and for Champions League rights in Germany for 2027-31.

Paramount eventually won the UK Champions League rights in a deal worth around £1 billion. Netflix has already spent huge sums on live sports.

It invested roughly £3.8bn in WWE and agreed a £70m payout for Anthony Joshua’s upcoming fight with Jake Paul.

The company now looks ready to compete with Sky and TNT Sports for Premier League rights, and it could also challenge NBC for the US packages.

NBC’s current deal expires in 2028 and is worth $2bn, the league’s biggest overseas contract. Bidding for the next round of Premier League packages will begin within the next 12 months.

Sources told The Times that Netflix made strong offers for UEFA packages but could not secure them because UEFA refused to separate the Super Cup rights.

Netflix also narrowly lost out to Paramount+ in Germany. Industry figures believe Netflix’s arrival will increase competition and drive up rights value.

The company already saw massive success with Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson and plans to show Women’s World Cup matches in the future.

It may target the Premier League’s festive fixture package first as it builds its presence in top-level football.
