Real Madrid star out for four months

Xabi Alonso now has limited options.

Real Madrid are going through a tough time both on and off the pitch. The win against Athletic Club was a positive result for Xabi Alonso.

Things were looking bright once again. However, last weekend, things once again went south after a surprising result at Santiago Bernabeu.

But the night went from bad to worse sooner rather than later, as the Los Blancos dealt with a significant defensive setback.

Also, medical tests confirmed that a key player has suffered a rupture of the biceps femoris tendon in his left leg.

The injury, sustained during Sunday’s shock 2-0 defeat to Celta Vigo, is expected to sideline him for around four months, ruling him out until early April, as per MARCA.

He collapsed during a sprint to prevent a Celta counterattack and immediately signalled for medical assistance.

The defender was helped off the pitch before heading straight down the tunnel, and the scans that followed delivered troubling news for a Madrid side already dealing with shortages in defence.

His absence comes at a time when Trent Alexander-Arnold is also out for two months with a thigh injury. Also, several other defenders remain short of full fitness.

Eder Militao had only just re-established rhythm after two difficult years recovering from consecutive ACL injuries.

Having featured 15 times this season, Militao had been one of Madrid’s most consistent performers. The timing could not be worse.

Real Madrid face Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday. Yet, Xabi Alonso now has limited options alongside Antonio Rudiger.

Academy graduate Raul Asencio or a repurposed full-back could come in. But, it will reduce tactical flexibility during a crucial spell of the campaign.

Militao’s leadership and physical presence have long been central to Madrid’s defensive structure.

His extended spell on the sidelines leaves a sizeable gap as the club approach one of the most demanding phases of their season.
