Robert Lewandowski has been one of Barcelona’s most reliable performers since arriving in Spain. His numbers speak for themselves.
Lewandowski’s goals have come consistently, and it is hard to question his numbers. However, the Polish striker has now revealed a strange moment from his time at the club.
Lewandowski has scored 109 goals in 165 appearances for Barcelona across all competitions. But that tally could have been even higher.
In November, reports emerged that Barcelona had asked him not to score in La Liga during the final matches of the season.
At the time, Lewandowski was sitting on 23 league goals. Reaching 25 would have activated a clause. That clause would have forced Barcelona to pay Bayern Munich an extra €2.5 million.
Now, Lewandowski has confirmed those reports. Speaking to Polish journalist Bogdan Rymanowski, via MARCA, he admitted that Barcelona did make such a request.
He said there were things he preferred not to discuss publicly. However, he understood the club’s situation. Barcelona were trying to resolve multiple issues for the good of the club.
Lewandowski explained that the payment was a bonus. He acknowledged that Barcelona were trying to save every possible euro at that time.
The Polish international said he had no problem with the decision, even though it stayed in his mind.
Lewandowski admitted he sometimes wondered whether to score or not. Still, he made it clear that nothing changed in his attitude on the pitch.
The 37-year-old’s contract will expire next summer. So, his future at Barcelona is yet to be resolved as multiple clubs from around the world tracking his situation.
