Earlier this month, Pep Guardiola’s side played out a 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur. The match sparked debate after a key moment involving Dominic Solanke and Marc Guehi.
Solanke’s goal stood despite appearing to kick through the leg of the City defender. That decision left several players frustrated. Ballon d’Or winner Rodri was one of those players.
After the final whistle, hisemotions spilled over. The comments he made after the game have now drawn attention from the FA.
According to the BBC, the Football Association has confirmed that Manchester City midfielder Rodri faces a misconduct charge.
The governing body stated that he acted in an “improper manner”. As per the FA, he made comments that “imply bias and/or question the integrity of a match official.”
Although the FA did not specify the exact words, Rodri’s post-match interview made headlines. Rodri said after the game:
“I know we won too much and the people do not want us to win, but the referee has to be neutral.
“It is not fair because we work so hard. When everything is finished, you are frustrated.”
Moreover, the Spain international suggested that City have suffered from repeated poor decisions this season. Rodri added:
“It is one game and another game and another game – and it is not possible.
“Honestly, I never speak about referees, I respect their job massively. But they have to pay attention to these things.”
Rodri also addressed the Solanke incident directly. He explained:
“He kicked the leg, it is so clear. It is two, three games in a row and I do not know why.”
As a result, the FA have now stepped in. Rodri has until 18 February to respond to the charge. Manchester City currently sit second in the Premier League table, four points behind Arsenal.
