One of international football’s most anticipated fixtures appears to have been scrapped.
The Finalissima was designed to be a celebration of global football.
The match brings together the champions of Europe and South America in a one-off showdown.
The revived competition returned in 2022, where it saw Argentina defeat Italy at Wembley.
Since then, fans have been waiting for the next edition.
The clash would have brought together two of the strongest national teams in world football.
However, plans for the match have now collapsed.
According to BBC Sport, the 2026 Finalissima between Spain and Argentina has been cancelled after organisers failed to reach an agreement on staging the game.
The match had originally been scheduled for 27 March 2026, where it was due to take place at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar.
However, the event quickly ran into difficulties.
Security concerns in the region forced organisers to reconsider the original venue.
At the same time, football authorities attempted to find alternative locations.
Several proposals were discussed behind the scenes, including potentially moving the game to the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid.
However, as discussions continued, it became increasingly difficult to find a suitable solution, with organisers concluding that playing the game was no longer possible.
The Finalissima itself remains a relatively rare fixture in international football.
The competition puts together the winners of the Copa America against the winners of the European Championship.
Argentina were the defending champions after winning the 2022 edition.
But for now, the next chapter of the competition will have to wait.
