Virgil van Dijk has made shocking bullying allegations recently. Footballers face criticism nowadays a lot.

And some find it very hard to cope with. Recently, Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo had to take a sabbatical because of such criticism and pressure.

Now, the Liverpool captain wanted to make it clear that such criticism is quite hard for young players to handle. And it can lead to mental struggles.

Also, he has issued a strong warning to former players turned pundits. The Dutch international claimed that their criticism can push young footballers toward bullying and mental health struggles.

The Liverpool captain made it clear he can personally handle criticism from ex-Premier League players and legends.

He recently had a spat with the former Manchester United player Wayne Rooney. However, his concern lies with the next generation.

According to Van Dijk, younger players are far more vulnerable due to constant exposure to social media. He said during an interview with Gary Neville on Sky Sports:

“For me personally, I can deal with it, but I am a bit worried for the next generation. I feel like the ex-top players have a responsibility to the new generation.”

The Dutch defender stressed that criticism is part of football and always will be. But he believes sometimes they cross the line just to gain attention. He explained:

“Sometimes criticism goes into being clickbait.

“Saying things just to provoke, without thinking about the repercussions on the mental side of players, especially the younger generation who are constantly on social media.”

Van Dijk revealed he often advises young Liverpool players to stay offline. Still, he admits that becomes difficult when criticism turns personal. He said:

“When you are getting bullied within bad criticism, it is hard to ignore”.

The Liverpool captain understands that criticism will be a part of life for players. However, he wants pundits to be careful and think about the mental repercussions on players before making comments.
