Wolverine in talks to buy Championship club

Wolverine did not reveal how large a stake he could purchase.

The 2026/27 Championship season has opened with another fiercely competitive promotion race taking shape across England’s second tier.

This campaign also features an expanded play-off format, with teams finishing from third to eighth now qualifying for the post-season battle.

Relegated Premier League clubs such as West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burnley entered the campaign among the heavily backed promotion contenders.

Meanwhile, clubs including Lincoln City and Wrexham are attempting to disrupt the established order during the 46-match regular season.

Another Championship club could now attract attention away from the pitch through a potentially significant celebrity investment.

Wolverine star Hugh Jackman is in talks over buying a stake in Norwich City, the club he has supported since childhood. Jackman told talkSPORT when asked about potentially investing in English football:

“I’m very, very interested – and talking about it right now. You’re the first one to know that. There’s a little exclusive.”

Jackman did not reveal how large a stake he could purchase, meaning the potential structure of any agreement remains uncertain.

American businessman Mark Attanasio currently owns 85 per cent of Norwich, while Delia Smith and Michael Wynn-Jones retain 10 per cent.

Independent supporters and individual investors hold the remaining five per cent of the Championship club.

Jackman’s connection with Norwich dates back to the age of seven through his UK-born mother, who came from the city.

The Australian actor previously received an invitation to become a minority investor in 2010 but decided against the opportunity.

However, Jackman has maintained his support and now appears increasingly interested in joining English football’s growing celebrity ownership movement.

His close friend Ryan Reynolds already co-owns Championship rivals Wrexham alongside fellow actor Rob Mac. Jackman nevertheless made his allegiance clear, saying:

“Good on Ryan, you do your thing, I’m all about the Canaries.”

Norwich have endured a difficult opening to the Championship season, sitting 20th after three defeats from their first four matches. Jackman remains optimistic about their prospects, declaring:

“This is the year we’re going to get promoted.”
