Liverpool’s problems at the back keep piling up. And now, AC Milan are looking to take advantage of the situation. Before the new season even started, the Reds were already light in central defence.
They tried to fix that by signing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace on deadline day, but the deal collapsed when Palace couldn’t get a replacement.
Guehi ended up staying and impressed in a 2-1 win against Arne Slot’s side. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s own defensive issues have worsened.
Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate have been starting, but teenage backup Giovanni Leoni is now out for the season with an ACL injury.
That leaves Joe Gomez, Rhys Williams, and Wataru Endo, who is not even a natural centre-back as the only alternatives. Despite all this, Italian giants AC Milan still want Joe Gomez.
According to Calciomercato, Milan were close to signing the 28-year-old during the summer. But Liverpool blocked the move after failing to land Guehi or another replacement.
Now, they are ready to try again in January. Gomez has barely featured this season. He just had 29 minutes in the Premier League so far and that is what Milan are hoping to exploit.
Manager Massimiliano Allegri is pushing for defensive reinforcements and he sees Gomez as an ideal option.
Liverpool still want to keep him, though. And with Leoni out, Gomez is expected to see more game time as the season progresses.
Since joining from Charlton in 2015, Gomez has made 244 appearances for Liverpool. Financially, January might be the right time for Liverpool to cash in if the right offer comes in.
Gomez’s contract runs until 2027, and the club could still fetch a decent fee. But unless something dramatic happens, Slot is unlikely to green-light a transfer.
Liverpool are still competing on multiple fronts. So even if Milan come back in with an offer, Liverpool may have no choice but to shut it down again.
