Some careers reach a natural turning point.
Just a quiet realisation that the chapter has run its course.
And that what comes next needs to look different.
Al Hilal table €90m-a-year offer for Barcelona superstar
According to Sportowe Fakty, Al Hilal are the most serious club in discussions with Lewandowski right now, presenting him with a concrete, official offer of €90 million per season.
Barcelona were willing to keep Lewandowski for another season, but only on the condition that he accepted half of his current salary.
That alone might have been a dealbreaker for a player of his status and ambition.
But it wasn’t even the biggest issue.
Lewandowski was also told that his role within the squad would not change.
That he would continue as a squad player rather than a guaranteed starter.
The decision to leave was essentially made for him.
What’s also notable is the reasoning behind his preference for Saudi Arabia over other European options.
At 37, Lewandowski is thinking beyond personal ambition.
He’s factoring in the wellbeing of the Polish national team, of which he remains captain.
Al Hilal themselves are an attractive destination on multiple levels.
They’re managed by Simone Inzaghi, one of Europe’s most respected coaches.
Their squad includes genuinely world-class players.
They reached the Club World Cup quarter-finals last year, eliminating Manchester City along the way.
The rivalry that football fans have dreamed of; Lewandowski vs Ronaldo, in the same league, on the same pitches.
Nothing is signed yet.
Things can always change in football until pen hits paper.
But right now, the direction is clear.
One of Barcelona’s greatest strikers is heading east.
And the number on the contract waiting for him is almost impossible to comprehend.
