This has been a tough transfer window for Manchester United. After the season they had, they shouldn’t have expected anything other than setbacks in their pursuit of targets.
Viktor Gyokeres had rejected Manchester United and now, he is joining Arsenal.
Manchester United went for Hugo Ekitike. But the Frenchman is now joining Liverpool.
After finishing 15th in the Premier League table and losing to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final, and failing to qualify for the Champions League, they should have braced for these setbacks.
Now, it looks like Manchester United will be facing another huge blow in the transfer market.
One of the main positions that Ruben Amorim wanted to upgrade was the goalkeeper. He wanted to replace Andre Onana, even though he was backing the Cameroonian publicly.
The Portuguese boss wanted to bring in Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa. Martinez played a key role in helping Argentina win the World Cup.
Also, he was the catalyst when Aston Villa played the quarter-final of the UEFA Champions League.
He renewed his contract with Villa until 2029. Aston Villa are not looking to sell their superstar goalkeeper.
However, they might accept an offer around £40 million, according to the Daily Mail.
But, Manchester United were proposing a loan move for the goalkeeper, and Aston Villa turned down the proposal immediately.
The Birmingham-based club will not get any benefit from a loan deal for a player who has a contract till 2029. Also, Martinez is the vice-captain for the team.
Manchester United are not in a position to spend £40 million on a goalkeeper as they want to sign a striker.
That is why they are looking at cheaper options. Antwerp’s Senne Lammens is one name getting mentioned by several outlets.
No matter what, this transfer window will not get easier for Manchester United as the Red Devils will not feature in Europe, and the glory days on the red side of Manchester seem like history now.
