Two of La Liga’s biggest clubs are now racing against the clock to finalise a deal that could have significant consequences for the summer and beyond.

As Atletico Madrid prepare for their upcoming involvement in the Club World Cup, they are determined to hold on to one of their most reliable performers from this season, a player currently due to return to his parent club at the end of June.

Barcelona, aware of the situation and open to fresh talks, are willing to negotiate.

The player in question has just completed a loan spell at the Metropolitano, where he has quietly been a key part of Diego Simeone’s backline.

With over 30 appearances this season, most of them as a starter, his performances have convinced Atletico to take the next step.

While the Club World Cup begins on June 15, his loan deal officially ends just two weeks later on June 30.

That creates a situation where he could be forced to leave the tournament mid-way unless an agreement is struck.

All sides are working to avoid that outcome, with discussions progressing well in recent days.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the player is none other than Clement Lenglet.

The 29-year-old, who is also part of France’s Nations League squad, remains focused on his future and that could very well be in Madrid rather than Catalonia next season.

Barcelona are open to receiving a small transfer fee for Clement Lenglet, while Atletico are considering both a short-term extension and a full transfer.

The Lenglet’s current contract runs until 2027, and a permanent move could depend on whether he agrees to reduce his salary.

The Spanish capital club would be open to offering him a longer deal in return.
