Atletico Madrid open talks for Manchester City midfielder

Atletico continue searching for further improvements in midfield.

Atletico Madrid are continuing their aggressive rebuild in midfield ahead of the new season.

Alex Baena and Johnny Cardoso both arrived at the Metropolitano last summer with huge expectations surrounding them.

However, injuries prevented both players from making the impact many supporters anticipated. Koke eventually played a far more important role than initially expected.

Meanwhile, Pablo Barrios also struggled with fitness issues during crucial parts of the campaign. Atletico additionally secured the arrivals of Obed Vargas and Rodrigo Mendoza in January.

However, both players are viewed more as long-term prospects rather than immediate starters.

The Spanish giants have also already reached an agreement for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes this summer. Still, Atletico continue searching for further improvements in midfield.

According to MARCA, Atletico Madrid have now opened talks with Manchester City regarding a move for Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders.

The report claims Reijnders could become one of the players allowed to leave the Etihad Stadium following Enzo Maresca’s arrival as Manchester City manager.

The Dutch international only joined Manchester City last summer after completing a move from AC Milan.

Before his transfer to England, Reijnders had established himself as one of Serie A’s standout midfielders during his two seasons with Milan.

Real Madrid were also looking to sign him before Manchester City secured the deal.

Although Reijnders produced seven goals and eight assists across 47 appearances last season, he struggled to secure a guaranteed starting role under Pep Guardiola.

Atletico reportedly believe the 27-year-old Dutch midfielder is also entering what many believe should be the peak years of his career.

Transfer News Live also reported that Atletico Madrid are also eyeing another Manchester City midfielder this summer.

Now, it remains to be seen whether Atletico Madrid can convince Manchester City to sanction Tijjani Reijnders’ departure this summer.
