Barcelona are assessing their defensive options after Ronald Araujo completed a season-long loan move to Liverpool.
The Uruguay international’s departure has reduced Hansi Flick’s options at centre-back ahead of the new campaign.
Barcelona could therefore strengthen that area before the summer transfer window closes. The Catalan giants are already working through a busy window after winning La Liga last season.
They have added Anthony Gordon to their attacking options, while further reinforcements remain under consideration. However, Araujo’s move to Anfield has created another issue for Flick.
Barcelona must decide whether their existing defenders can cover his absence or whether another centre-back is required.
According to TNT Sports Brazil (via MundoDeportivo), Barcelona are considering Real Betis defender Natan as a possible replacement for Araujo.
The Brazilian’s name had previously been discussed internally, but the situation has reportedly progressed following Araujo’s departure.
As per reports, Barcelona have now started talks with Real Betis over the possibility of negotiating a transfer for the 25-year-old.
Natan had already emerged on Barcelona’s radar before the latest development. His agent previously offered the defender to the Spanish champions following his performances for Betis.
The Brazilian is also a left-footed centre-back, which could give Flick another option when organising his defensive unit for the coming campaign.
However, Barcelona have yet to make Natan their main transfer priority. The club are currently focusing on other areas of Flick’s squad.
The Blaugrana are focusing on their pursuit of a striker and their efforts to strengthen midfield with Rodri. Araujo’s exit nevertheless means Barcelona must consider their defensive depth carefully.
They also need to determine how much responsibility they are ready to place on the club’s younger defenders.
Natan has consequently emerged as a potential solution, with discussions underway between Barcelona and Betis.
Whether those talks develop into a formal move will now depend on Barcelona’s transfer priorities during the remaining weeks of the window.
