Barcelona enjoyed another outstanding domestic campaign under Hansi Flick last season.
The Catalan giants successfully defended their La Liga title and strengthened their attack this summer with the arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi.
However, replacing Robert Lewandowski remains one of the club’s biggest priorities before the transfer window closes. The search for a long-term centre-forward has now intensified.
Barcelona initially identified Eli Junior Kroupi as an alternative option. However, the youngster’s injury has forced the club to rethink its plans as Flick pushes for a proven goalscorer.
That setback has prompted a major transfer decision. According to El Nacional, Barcelona now believe they must significantly increase their offer for Julian Alvarez if they want to beat Arsenal to his signature.
The Spanish outlet claims Barcelona opened negotiations with a proposal worth around €100M, hoping the striker’s desire to move would convince Atletico Madrid to negotiate.
However, the situation has changed dramatically. Arsenal have entered the race with greater financial power, placing additional pressure on Barcelona to improve their offer.
As a result, Joan Laporta is now considering increasing the club’s bid to €150M. Flick continues to view Alvarez as his priority signing.
The Barcelona manager believes the Argentina international’s pressing, movement, finishing and link-up play make him the perfect fit alongside Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Pedri.
However, raising the offer would come at a cost. Barcelona could have to postpone other transfer plans, delay the signing of a central defender and accelerate player sales to finance such a significant deal.
Even so, Flick believes signing Alvarez is vital to his long-term project. Barcelona still hope the player’s desire to join the club will work in their favour.
But Laporta now faces a major financial decision as Arsenal continue to threaten their pursuit.
