Barcelona are continuing to work on multiple transfer operations ahead of next season as the club reshapes the squad following another La Liga title-winning campaign.
The Catalan giants are already pushing to strengthen several areas of the team. One of their priorities involves securing Joao Cancelo permanently after the Portuguese defender arrived on loan in January.
Negotiations are now ongoing between Barcelona and Al-Hilal as the Spanish champions attempt to reach an agreement for the full-back.
However, discussions between the two clubs have also unexpectedly opened another possible transfer route involving a high-profile attacker.
Barcelona remain in the market for a new striker because Robert Lewandowski is leaving the club.
Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez remains the priority target, but the deal continues to look extremely difficult.
The Los Colchoneros have publicly ruled out selling the Argentine international. Also, Barcelona would struggle financially to complete a deal worth more than €100 million.
That situation has forced Barcelona to consider alternative attacking options behind the scenes.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Al-Hilal raised the possibility of including former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez during negotiations with Barcelona over Joao Cancelo.
Nunez joined Al-Hilal from Liverpool last summer in a deal worth €53 million. However, the 26-year-old has not played for the club since February.
The Uruguayan was excluded following changes to the foreign-player limit after Karim Benzema’s arrival.
Before losing his place in the squad, Nunez registered nine goals and five assists across 24 appearances.
Barcelona are reportedly unlikely to pursue the former Liverpool star unless their move for Julian Alvarez collapses completely.
Meanwhile, the Spanish champions have already invested heavily elsewhere after agreeing a deal for Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United in a transfer that could eventually reach €80 million.
Liverpool originally signed Darwin Nunez from Benfica for €85 million in 2022. However, the striker struggled to consistently meet expectations at Anfield before eventually moving to Saudi Arabia.
