Barcelona have entered the race to sign Rodri, opening talks over a deal that could derail Real Madrid’s long-running pursuit of the Manchester City midfielder.
The transfer looked destined for the Santiago Bernabeu earlier this summer, but negotiations have stalled in recent days.
Madrid remain reluctant to meet City’s valuation, while internal squad planning has complicated the operation.
With the situation at a standstill, Barcelona have moved quickly to explore whether they can capitalise.
According to The Athletic, Barcelona have already held discussions with Rodri’s representatives over the framework of a potential move.
The report adds that Hansi Flick’s project appeals to the Spain international, particularly as he would reunite with several teammates from the national side.
However, Barcelona would still need player sales to improve their financial position before pursuing a deal.
Rodri enjoyed another outstanding campaign despite being carefully managed after his previous ACL injury.
He made 33 appearances for Manchester City during the 2025–26 season. Also, he remained City’s midfield anchor as they lifted the FA Cup.
The 30-year-old then elevated his reputation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Rodri captained Spain to the title.
He started all eight matches and won the Golden Ball after producing a series of commanding midfield displays throughout the tournament.
His contract at Manchester City now has just 12 months remaining, and The Athletic reports that he has shown little willingness to sign an extension.
Real Madrid continue to monitor the situation after previously agreeing that personal terms would not be an issue. But negotiations with City over a transfer fee have remained unresolved.
Barcelona’s interest has also been strengthened by Frenkie de Jong’s long-term knee injury. Now, Flick is short of an experienced holding midfielder.
Real Madrid have not abandoned their pursuit, but Barcelona’s intervention has transformed the race into one of the biggest transfer battles of the summer.
