Barcelona pick their next centre-back

Flick has already found his ideal choice.

Barcelona have to reassess their defensive plans as the season reaches a crucial phase. Injuries to key players have exposed a worrying lack of depth at the back.

The situation became worse after Andreas Christensen’s ACL injury, an issue that will keep him sidelined for several months.

It is a significant blow for both player and club, especially with the timing. With Ronald Araujo also unavailable, Barcelona suddenly find themselves stretched in defence.

Head coach Hansi Flick has already accepted the problem. He also confirmed he will hold discussions with sporting director Deco about the possibility of signing new players in January.

This has only raised speculations around potential arrivals. However, the club are mindful of balancing short-term needs against long-term planning.

According to Diario Sport, Deco has already found his ideal choice. Marc Guehi sits at the top of Barcelona’s shortlist, ahead of alternatives such as Nico Schlotterbeck and Pau Torres.

The Palace defender’s composure, leadership and ability to play out from the back align closely with what Barcelona want in a central defender.

However, securing Guehi will not be an easy task. The England international has caught the attention from several elite clubs across Europe.

This ensures any race for his signature will be a close contest. Also, Guehi is entering the final year of his deal at Crystal Palace.

So, he can hold talks with overseas clubs from the start of the year. Thus, with the current financial situation, Barcelona would ideally like to move for Guehi in the summer.
