Barcelona plan move for France centre-back

Barcelona cannot advance the operation until they receive clarity regarding Balde’s future.

Barcelona have started the 2026–27 campaign strongly under Hansi Flick after completing a demanding summer preparation schedule.

The Catalan giants carried their positive pre-season momentum into La Liga by beating Elche 5–0 away from home.

Raphinha scored twice during the victory, while Karim Adeyemi and Fermin Lopez also impressed in Barcelona’s attacking system.

However, Barcelona are still working on their squad as the final days of the summer transfer window approach.

Their attention has now shifted towards strengthening the defensive line before the market closes.

Flick wants another option who can operate centrally while also providing cover on the left side of defence.

That search could become increasingly important if Barcelona sanction another significant departure during the closing stages.

Alejandro Balde’s future remains uncertain, with Manchester United showing interest in signing the 22-year-old left-back.

According to The Athletic, Barcelona have identified Castello Lukeba as their preferred defensive target if Balde leaves this summer.

The 23-year-old currently plays for RB Leipzig and can operate at centre-back or left-back when required.

Lukeba previously had an €80 million release clause this summer, although the deadline for activating it has expired.

His contract will contain another release clause worth €65 million when the next summer transfer window arrives.

However, Leipzig could consider negotiating a deal now rather than waiting for that clause to become active.

The German club could listen to offers between €45 million and €50 million this summer.

Flick strongly supports the potential move after closely following Lukeba’s development during his time in the Bundesliga.

He joined Leipzig from Lyon in 2023 after spending only two professional seasons with the French club. Leipzig paid €34 million including bonuses, while Lyon also secured 20% of any future profit.

However, Barcelona cannot advance the operation until they receive clarity regarding Balde’s future before the window closes.
