Barcelona have been working hard to secure one of the brightest young wingers in Spain.
Nico Williams, only 22, has impressed scouts and fans alike with his speed, skill, and confidence on the ball.
After months of back-and-forth, the club seemed to have things under control.
Nico had made his choice. He wanted to play at Camp Nou. Talks between his agent and the club had advanced quickly.
A six-year deal had been agreed in principle. His salary demands were also met. Everything looked ready. But then, something changed.
Fans expected a signing announcement. Instead, silence. The excitement turned into confusion.
Barcelona had already faced pressure from Athletic Club. The Basque side had even contacted La Liga about the situation.
They did not want to lose their star to a direct rival. At the same time, Bayern Munich started making their move.
They were ready to pay his full release clause around €62 million. They knew that Athletic would much prefer that route.
But Nico had already told Barcelona he wanted them. So what went wrong?
According to Mundo Deportivo, things broke down once the agreement was being written into official documents.
Nico’s agent started pushing for strong registration guarantees; legal terms ensuring the player would be registered properly with La Liga without delays.
Given Barcelona’s recent struggles to register players like Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor, Nico’s team wanted to avoid a similar mess.
Barcelona, however, saw the demands as excessive. They were not part of the early talks. The tone from the agent also changed, and that has not gone down well inside the club.
Now, the deal is stuck. Nico Williams still wants to wear the Blaugrana shirt.
But unless both sides find middle ground soon, Bayern Munich may swoop in and this golden opportunity for Barcelona could slip away.
