Marc Cucurella has gone to Real Madrid.
The left-back position at Stamford Bridge is vacant.
And while most expected Chelsea to look to the Premier League or the Bundesliga for a replacement, Xabi Alonso and his recruitment team have cast their net elsewhere entirely.
The answer, it turns out, might be hiding in plain sight in La Liga.
Chelsea identify Rayo Vallecano’s Pep Chavarria as surprise Marc Cucurella replacement
According to Marca, Chelsea have identified Pep Chavarria as a top target to fill the gap left by Cucurella’s departure, with initial contact already having taken place between intermediaries and the Stamford Bridge hierarchy weighing up whether to submit a formal offer.
The 28-year-old has spent his entire career in Spain and made 125 appearances for Rayo Vallecano.
He recently played every minute of their run to the Conference League final before losing 1-0 to Crystal Palace.
That kind of durability and reliability has caught Chelsea’s attention.
He is not a name most Premier League fans will be familiar with.
But that’s precisely the point.
Alonso’s recruitment philosophy this summer has shifted.
Away from young prospects bought as long-term projects, toward ready-made, experienced profiles who can contribute immediately in a squad that needs to start winning again.
Chavarria fits that brief.
His release clause is reported to be somewhere between €25 million and €50 million depending on the source.
A figure Chelsea could activate if they receive Chavarría’s approval on personal terms.
Chavarria is contracted until 2030, which gives the side every reason to be patient and demanding.
For Chelsea, the financial logic is straightforward.
They sold Cucurella for £51.8 million.
Landing a left-back who knows the position inside out for anything near the lower end of the release clause figure represents genuinely smart business.
Freeing up capital for more pressing additions in attack and midfield.
The surprise of it only adds to the appeal.
No bidding war.
No inflated Premier League premium.
Just a reliable, experienced Spaniard who Rayo Vallecano built their left side around last season, and who Chelsea believe can do exactly the same at Stamford Bridge.
