Chelsea lost Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid earlier this summer.
The left-back position needed addressing.
An initial offer went in for Pep Chavarria.
However, Rayo Vallecano rejected it.
And now Chelsea have come back stronger.
Chelsea agree personal terms with Marc Cucurella replacement
According to Marca, Chelsea are accelerating their pursuit of Chavarria, submitting a new offer worth around €25 million including a fixed fee and add-ons, after their initial proposal of less than €15 million was rejected by the Madrid club a week ago.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Chavarria has already agreed personal terms with Chelsea.
And in a significant show of commitment to making this deal happen, the 28-year-old has even accepted a reduction in his personal wage demands to help bridge the gap between the clubs.
He wants this.
He wants to play in the Premier League.
And he wants to do it at Stamford Bridge.
Rayo Vallecano are willing to sell.
But club president Raul Martin Presa is personally overseeing negotiations and is holding firm on one central point, the €25 million must be guaranteed, not structured predominantly through add-ons.
That distinction is the final hurdle.
Xabi Alonso has been explicit about his desire to sign Chavarria.
The Chelsea manager values the 28-year-old’s versatility across the defensive left side.
Chavarria joined Rayo Vallecano from Real Zaragoza in 2022 and has made 125 appearances for the club.
Establishing himself as one of La Liga’s most reliable and technically composed left-backs across four consistent seasons.
His contract in Madrid runs for four more years.
The leverage is all Rayo’s.
But with personal terms done, the player pushing and Chelsea returning with an improved proposal, the direction of travel couldn’t be clearer.
The structure of the fee is all that remains.
And in transfers that have reached this point, that gap rarely stays open for long.
