Chelsea hijack Newcastle United for Nigerian wonderkid

Chelsea and Newcastle both have £21.6m bids accepted for AIK teenager Zadok Yohanna as wonderkid prepares to choose his destination.

Some signings don’t grab headlines immediately.

They’re not the record-breaking moves.

Not the names that dominate transfer windows.

But they’re the ones that, three or four years down the line, everyone says they saw coming.

Zadok Yohanna might be one of those players.

And right now, Chelsea and Newcastle United are fighting to find out first.

Chelsea and Newcastle both have £21.6m bids accepted for AIK teenager Zadok Yohanna as wonderkid prepares to choose his destination

According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea have matched Newcastle United’s offer for 18-year-old Swedish winger Zadok Yohanna, with the Daily Mail reporting that bids worth £21.6 million from both clubs have been accepted by AIK.

The ball is now in Yohanna’s court.

He must choose his destination.

And the expectation, given the relative pull of both clubs, is that Chelsea have the advantage.

And for a teenager deciding where to begin his Premier League career, the stature and ambition of the new Chelsea project under Xabi Alonso is a powerful argument to make.

AIK confirmed the situation in a club statement: “AIK Fotboll has initiated negotiations regarding the sale of player Zadok Yohanna. The current bid indicates a net profit effect higher than £20m. If and when an agreement has been reached, this will be communicated.”

Manchester City had also registered interest at an earlier stage, making this one of the most hotly contested pursuits of a young Swedish talent in recent memory.

Yohanna’s numbers justify every bit of that attention.

Five goals and four assists in just 12 appearances for AIK in the 2025-26 Swedish Allsvenskan campaign.

Returns that stand out even more when you consider he’s still 18 years old and playing at a competitive professional level.

The winger fits the profile Chelsea have been consistently targeting in recent windows.

Under Alonso, the emphasis at Stamford Bridge is shifting.

Away from a model that signed young players as pure investments, toward a blend of experience and genuine talent with a clear pathway to the first team.

Yohanna is part of that longer-term thinking.

Whether he develops into a regular at Stamford Bridge will depend on many things.

But the raw material is clearly there.

And in Chelsea versus Newcastle, the answer feels fairly clear.
