Chelsea have undergone a major squad overhaul since Xabi Alonso arrived at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues spent heavily during the summer while also generating significant income through player sales. Morgan Rogers arrived for £117M, while Maxence Lacroix strengthened the defence.
Emiliano Martinez, Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck added valuable experience to Alonso’s squad. Meanwhile, Enzo Fernandez completed a major move to Manchester City.
Results have remained inconsistent while Chelsea adapt to their substantial summer changes. Arsenal and Brentford inflicted damaging defeats during the opening weeks.
However, Chelsea have also demonstrated considerable attacking quality. They beat Brighton 4-3 before dismantling Bournemouth 5-1 in the Premier League.
Joao Pedro’s goals have helped Chelsea climb to sixth place. Alonso could now receive another experienced addition during the January transfer window.
According to Football Insider, Chelsea are ready to offer Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong a ‘hefty’ contract to tempt him towards Stamford Bridge.
The 29-year-old would represent a different recruitment profile compared with many recent Chelsea additions.
Chelsea believe his experience could provide greater control and stability within Alonso’s midfield. His ability to receive possession under pressure also appeals to the London club.
De Jong can carry possession through midfield and dictate the tempo of matches. Those qualities have encouraged Chelsea to continue monitoring his situation.
However, Barcelona remain in a strong negotiating position over the Netherlands international.
De Jong signed a new contract last year which runs until 2029. Barcelona therefore face no immediate contractual pressure to sanction his departure.
He also remains an important player for Hansi Flick, creating another major obstacle for Chelsea.
Personal terms would consequently represent only one part of any potential January agreement.
Chelsea are prepared to make De Jong one of their highest-paid players if Barcelona agree to negotiate.
A January transfer remains difficult, but Chelsea’s willingness to offer a substantial salary underlines their serious interest.
The Blues will continue monitoring whether Barcelona’s stance changes before making their next move.
🚨 Chelsea are preparing a January move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
The Blues are ready to offer De Jong a “𝗛𝗘𝗙𝗧𝗬” 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗧, but Barcelona would demand at least £50M to sell.
Barcelona are not actively looking to sell the 29-year-old, making a winter agreement difficult.
