Barcelona enjoyed another outstanding campaign during the 2025-26 season. Hansi Flick guided the club to a second successive La Liga title after a remarkable league campaign.
Although the Blaugrana added another domestic trophy, their exits from the Copa del Rey and the Champions League quarter-finals ensured they entered the summer determined to improve further.
The Catalan giants have already strengthened their squad ahead of the new campaign. Anthony Gordon has arrived from Newcastle United, while Barcelona continue to push for Julian Alvarez.
The club is also working to complete Joao Cancelo’s permanent transfer after securing Hamza Abdelkarim on a long-term deal.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are preparing for a fresh start under Xabi Alonso. The Blues endured a disappointing campaign last season and missed out on European football.
Since taking charge, Alonso has wasted little time identifying the areas that need strengthening, with the defence emerging as one of his biggest priorities.
The London club have already moved for Marco Palestra, but Alonso wants more quality at the back.
According to El Nacional, Chelsea also targeted Pau Cubarsi and submitted an opening offer worth €80 million for the Barcelona defender.
However, Joan Laporta immediately rejected the proposal, making it clear that Barcelona had no intention of negotiating.
As a result, Chelsea have little room to negotiate. The report states Barcelona will only consider Cubarsi’s departure if a club activates the full value of his €500 million release clause.
🚨 Chelsea have made an €80M bid to sign Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsí, but the offer has been rejected.
Xabi Alonso is eager to strengthen his defence and has identified the teenage centre-back as a priority target after his impressive World Cup performances.
