Some transfers feel like they’ve been inevitable for months.
And now, after all of it, the confirmation has arrived.
Marc Cucurella is joining Real Madrid.
Real Madrid reach verbal agreement to sign Marc Cucurella from Chelsea
According to Fabrizio Romano, a verbal agreement is now in place between Real Madrid and Cucurella himself, with the Spanish left-back set to complete his move to the Bernabeu following the conclusion of the World Cup.
“HERE WE GO,” Romano confirmed on X.
The deal covers all three parties, club to club and player agreement included.
Cucurella will leave Chelsea and join Real Madrid once Spain’s tournament involvement in North America ends.
The move ends a transfer saga that has been building all summer.
Cucurella is all of those things.
The 26-year-old has developed significantly since his initial difficult period at Stamford Bridge following his £56 million move from Brighton in 2022.
Mourinho made his preference clear to the club’s hierarchy and Florentino Pérez backed the request.
Yet, the result is a deal that takes Cucurella to the club’s biggest rival — a subplot that will not be lost on the Barcelona fans who had hoped to see their former academy graduate return.
For Chelsea, the sale frees up both a significant wage and squad space.
Xabi Alonso’s summer rebuild now has one fewer left-back to work around — and the funds generated from the departure can be redirected toward the attacking additions the new manager has prioritised.
The timing — post-World Cup — gives Cucurella the chance to finish the tournament in full focus with Spain.
Then, when he returns from North America, a new chapter begins at the Bernabéu.
Mourinho has his left-back.
Real Madrid have their answer at one of the positions most in need of reinforcement.
And Chelsea have their sale.
