Yesterday, Liverpool confirmed the news that all fans were waiting for.
After weeks of speculation, the club announced the signing of German international Florian Wirtz.
The 22-year old arrives from Bayer Leverkusen for a club record fee.
For an initial £100 million, the fee could rise to £116 million with performance related add-ons.
The cost of Wirtz signing for Liverpool eclipses their previous most expensive fees paid for Virgil van Dijk and Darwin Núñez in 2018 and 2022 respectively.
Wirtz also becomes the 10th football player in history to move to over £100 million, a fee previously seen as impossible.
Should the add ons increase to £116 million, it would make him the most expensive transfer in Premier League history, and in the top five across the world.
The news of Liverpool’s Wirtz came somewhat out of the blue.
This is given the previous history of Liverpool’s spending under FSG.
Jeremie Frimpong is already through the door and the club have agreed a £40 million deal for Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez.
Having been linked with Bayern Munich and Manchester City, Liverpool managed to secure the services of Wirtz.
This a huge statement from Liverpool as they aim to build whilst on top.
Florian Wirtz reveals the key to Liverpool move
It has now been revealed by Wirtz the reason why he chose Liverpool over some of Europe’s top clubs.
Speaking after his move was confirmed, he spoke of how discussions with Liverpool manager Arne Slot convinced him to make the switch to Merseyside.
Slot became the fifth manager in history to win a Premier League in their first season in the league.
There have been many that felt that he won the league with Jürgen Klopp’s team.
The Dutchman is now putting his stamp on the team, with the Wirtz arrival a real signal of intent.
🔴 Florian Wirtz confirms talks with Arne Slot have been key to make deal happen: “I can remember the first time, he already showed me some scenes of how we want to play and how I could fit in the team”.
