Girona were dealt a dose of reality in 2024/25.
A season prior, and Girona finished third in La Liga just two seasons after being promoted to Spain’s top flight.
Their incredible season even saw them top of the league table in January 2024.
However, they won just three games in February and March, with a draw and four losses.
Despite there being an element of what could have been, it was still a fairytale season for Girona as they secured UEFA Champions League football for the first time.
They won just three of their first 11 La Liga games at the start of the 2024/25 season.
The team would go on to finish in 16th place and only a point clear of the relegation places.
Pressure will be placed on Girona manager Míchel to get things right this season as they try to avoid any relegation.
They have earmarked a player that they hope will be able to change there fortunes around one year on from being the La Liga surprise act.
Girona agree loan deal for former Arsenal and Liverpool target
It has been reported that Girona have agreed a deal to sign former Monaco midfielder Thomas Lemar on loan from La Liga side Atlético Madrid.
Lemar played just three La Liga games in 2023/24 due to injury.
His struggles continued in 2024/25, with just five league appearances for Diego Simeone’s side for a total of 80 minutes playing time.
Once a target of Arsenal and Liverpool, Lemar has been deemed surplus to requirements at Atlético.
He signed from Monaco for a fee of €70 million back in 2018. The move has not worked out, failing to live up to the heavy price tag that was paid for by the Madrid side.
Lemar will look to regain form at the Spanish side, form that saw Arsenal bid £92 million for his services back in August 2017.
