Japan’s World Cup campaign is over.
But for one player in it, the tournament has launched him into a transfer race involving some of the biggest clubs in European football.
He scored against Brazil in the round of 32.
Provided an assist against Tunisia in the group stage.
He played in all but one of Japan’s matches.
And now Liverpool are ready to pay £50 million to make him theirs.
Liverpool prepare £50m bid for Mainz midfielder and World Cup star Kaishu Sano
According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool are leading the chase for Sano, with sources confirming the Reds are prepared to offer up to €60 million for the 25-year-old defensive midfielder after holding talks over a deal.
Mainz value him at close to that figure and are determined to stick to their price tag.
Yet, Liverpool are best placed.
The situation is straightforward.
And the real value lies in what isn’t captured by statistics.
His tireless work rate.
His ability to win the ball in the most congested areas of the pitch.
Those qualities were on full display at the World Cup, and they’re exactly what Andoni Iraola has been building his Liverpool around since arriving at Anfield.
Yet, Mainz will not stand in his way if the right offer arrives.
His contract runs until 2028, giving the German club leverage but not a reason to block a move given the player’s clear desire to test himself in the Premier League.
For Liverpool, the urgency is real.
With the summer window progressing and multiple clubs in contact, any delay risks another club accelerating and closing the gap.
But, £50 million is a record sale for Mainz.
A statement signing for Andoni Iraola.
And Japan’s World Cup star heading to Anfield.
